This paper assesses the individual and regional determinants of commuting due to work in the municipalities of the state of Ceará. With regard to methodological aspects, the hierarchical spatial logit model was used. The data used come from the 2010 Census, by IBGE, FIRJAN, DENATRAN, DATASUS and IPEADATA. The results at the individual level indicate that the workers who have greater chances of commuting are: male; whites; Older; with a higher educational level; and who reside in an urban area. At the municipal level, evidence shows that the higher the level of employment and income in the formal sector and the Gini coefficient of the municipalities, the lower the chances of daily commuting to work. The probability of commuting increases with greater access to public transport, in addition to a higher level of employment and income in the formal sector and a greater degree of urbanization in neighboring municipalities.
