The objective of this paper was to estimate and analyze the Regional Development Index (IDRG) of the Minimum Comparable Areas (MCA) in Mato Grosso do Sul State from 2004 to 2016. The regionalization of the Minimum Comparable Areas (MCA) was used to be possible to make intertemporal spatial comparisons. A Regional Development Index (IDRG) was estimated for each AMC for the years 2004 and 2016. The results show that there is high heterogeneity in the state both in terms of economic results and levels of development, with the AMCs with a profile more focused on industry, especially the manufacturing industry, with more diversified production structures and higher levels of development. On the other hand, the AMCs more focused on rural areas and with high productive mono specialization in agriculture and livestock, and which were not able to make the transition from an agrarian economy to an urban-industrial economy, showed a low level of development.
