"NEET" generation in the COVID-19 pandemic: An approach with logistic regressions

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about wide ranging changes in the Brazilian economy and, among the impacts on the labor market, we can cite the growth in the number of people who Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET). This study analyzes which factors discussed in the literature affect the decision of young Brazilians not to study or work during the pandemic. For this, Logit Binomials and Multinomials were applied in data fore 2020 from PNAD COVID-19. The results found through the Binomial Logit indicate that family and skill factors negatively affect the position of the Brazilian youth as a “NEET”. Whil personal factors, such as the youth’s age, and factors related to social benefits, positively influence Brazilian youth to have a “NEET” status. The results obtained through the Multinomial Logit show that being from the North or Northeast increases the chance of a young person not studying and being unemployed, compared to being from the Southeast. But the opposite occurs when considering the youth who does not study and is discouraged.
