Abstract

This study analyzed the spatial factors associated with of SUS hospitalization rates (smoothed) due to road traffic accidents in the cities of Paraná, Brazil, in the period from 2008 to 2018. The theoretical basis used for the Grossman model (2000; 1972b; 1972a). The Spatial Empirical Bayesian smoothing method, Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis and Spatial Panel Data model were used. The factors used were GDP per capita, vehicle motorization rate, population density, and prevalence of accidents (victimization). The results showed that hospitalization rates were positively associated with real GDP per capita and motorization rate, and negatively associated with population density. We also found spillover effects of neighborhood demographic variables on the hospitalization rate for a given municipality. The evidence of this study can help public managers in coordinated actions on resource allocation, implementation of road traffic safety policies and improving human capital and the quality of life of victims.
