COMPARATIVE RENTAL COST FOR CITIES AND CENSUS WEIGHTING AREA
Abstract
This work presents a rent index for 3,218 Brazilian municipalities and for 2,434 census districts of the 100 most populous cities. We use micro data information on rent values from the 2010 census. We estimate a CPD model correcting for the sample selection bias a la Heckman. The results indicate great heterogeneity in rent costs among municipalities and between areas of the same city. This heterogeneity highlights the importance of introducing greater geographical breakdown in the creation of these indices. The income inequality among municipalities calculated with the values corrected for the cost of living is much lower than that observed with the Census values.Downloads
